Italy Investigates Suno Over Unfair AI Music Terms
The Italian Antitrust Authority opened an investigation into AI music startup Suno over terms of service that may unfairly disadvantage consumers.
The Italian Antitrust Authority launched an investigation on Tuesday into the AI music startup Suno, alleging that the company's terms of service contain unfair clauses. The regulator claims these terms create a significant imbalance in user rights and obligations by granting Suno broad discretion to unilaterally change contracts, services, and subscription prices without providing justification.
Beyond pricing and contract changes, the authority argues that the user license is excessively broad. Specifically, the regulator stated that the terms include a waiver of moral rights that may conflict with Italian copyright law. The probe also targets clauses that require users to waive their class-action rights and resolve all disputes through mandatory arbitration in Massachusetts, United States.
To further the investigation, the regulator plans to launch a consultation with business groups, chambers of commerce, and consumer associations in the coming weeks.
