Microsoft Trains Sales Team to Target OpenAI and Anthropic

Microsoft is instructing its sales staff to highlight competitor shortcomings and pitch its AI as a complete end-to-end system to regain investor confidence.

Microsoft Corp. is training its sales force to aggressively target AI competitors, including OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, and Google, by emphasizing the flaws in their products. During internal strategy sessions on July 15 and 16 for the new fiscal year, executives directed staff to frame Microsoft offerings as a comprehensive end-to-end system, contrasting them with the fragmented components sold by rivals.

Executives specifically targeted Anthropic's Claude, claiming the model is slower and less accurate and lacks critical security integrations when used within Microsoft office applications. This aggressive posture follows a corporate shift where Microsoft has replaced third-party models from OpenAI and Anthropic with cheaper in-house alternatives to lower operational costs. Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella has emphasized the need for AI cost monitoring and more affordable models for customers.

These strategic moves aim to stabilize the company's stock, which has fallen 20% this year. The decline is attributed to investor concerns regarding massive expenditures on AI infrastructure and the rising competitive pressure from AI startups.
