UK Deploys Protector Drones to Monitor Russian Naval Activity

The Royal Air Force deployed Protector RG1 drones for the first time to track Russian warships in the English Channel.

The Royal Air Force has deployed Protector RG1 drones for the first time to monitor Russian naval activity around British shores, specifically within the English Channel. Between late September and mid-October, these unarmed drones provided over ten hours of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance coverage, operating in coordination with Royal Navy warships and helicopters.

This operational shift follows a 25% increase in Russian activity in British waters during the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The Ministry of Defence is responding to threats involving Russian vessels monitoring critical underwater cables and the potential for ship-launched drone swarms.

To counter these threats, the government is investing an additional £330 million over four years to enhance anti-submarine capabilities and seabed monitoring. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stated the deployment demonstrates innovation to "monitor and deter threats and irresponsible provocation."
