Economists Dispute Market Predictions for Bank of England Rate Hikes
Bank of England officials and financial analysts challenge market expectations that UK interest rates will reach 5% by next summer.
Financial experts and officials from the Bank of England disagree with market predictions that UK interest rates will climb to 4.75% or 5% by next summer. While market-implied expectations suggest at least four rate hikes over the coming year, analysts from ING, Deutsche Bank, and Oxford Economics argue that such a sharp tightening cycle is unlikely because energy costs have not yet triggered a broader surge in prices.
Deutsche Bank and Oxford Economics both project that rates will peak at 4.25% by February 2027. Sanjay Raut, chief UK economist at Deutsche Bank, argues that current market pricing reflects baked-in risk premia rather than actual expected hikes. Additionally, economists from ING suggest the bank could be cutting rates again by the end of next year.
The Bank of England is widely expected to raise rates to 4% at its November 5 meeting, following a rise in inflation to 3.5% in September. Huw Pill, the bank's chief economist, has expressed skepticism regarding the necessity of four rate hikes over the next year.
