Australian EV Market Share Exceeds 20 Percent for Third Month

Electric vehicles maintained a market share of over 20 percent for the third consecutive month in Australia, with battery EVs accounting for 21.7 percent of new car sales in July 2026. Data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries shows that 23,510 battery EVs were delivered out of a record-breaking total of 103,656 new vehicles for the month.

Total EV sales for 2026 reached 127,244 by the end of July, a figure that already exceeds the full-year total for 2025. BYD has solidified its position as the second-most popular car manufacturer in the country, selling 7,857 vehicles in July and increasing its year-to-date sales by 115 percent compared to the previous year. Toyota remained the most popular brand in the market.

Despite the rapid growth in adoption, industry leadership warns that the deployment of public charging infrastructure may not keep pace with demand. Tony Weber highlighted the specific needs of motorists in regional areas and those without home charging access, stating that governments and the private sector must collaborate to address these gaps.
