Drone Strikes Hit Russian Refineries, Residential Areas and Libyan Plant

A series of drone strikes targeted critical infrastructure and residential areas in Russia and Libya between August 8 and August 9, 2026. In Russia, Ukrainian drones launched what Acting Regional Governor Aleksandr Shuvayev described as "the large-scale attack" on Belgorod on Sunday. The strikes damaged four apartment blocks, a private home, and an administrative building, wounding at least 13 people, including two children.

Earlier on August 8, a drone attack hit the Ilysky Oil Refinery in the Krasnodar Territory. The Operational Headquarters of the Krasnodar Territory reported that falling debris triggered a fire at the facility, injuring five people. These repeated strikes on refineries in the Kuban region have contributed to a local fuel crisis, driving up the cost and demand for gas cylinder equipment installations among motorists.

Simultaneously, a drone struck a fuel tank at the Zawiya oil refinery in Libya early Saturday morning. The Zawiya Oil Refining Co. reported that the drone pierced the wall of an untreated naphtha tank, causing a leak that personnel later contained. While no injuries or fires occurred, the refinery warned that the presence of military equipment on its premises poses a serious risk to lives and the environment amid ongoing armed clashes between rival governments in the region.
