Starbucks Lays Off 224 Workers in Corporate Restructuring

Starbucks is eliminating 224 regional and corporate positions as part of a broader cost-reduction strategy to regain market share and increase efficiency.

Starbucks Corporation announced the layoff of 224 regional and corporate workers on August 20, 2026, as part of its Back to Starbucks reorganization plan. The cuts include 104 roles primarily within store design and construction teams, while approximately 120 workers will be separated by November 1 after declining offers to relocate from Seattle to the company's new corporate headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.

Under CEO Brian Niccol, the company is pursuing a broader strategy to reduce $2 billion in costs over two years to address financial stagnation and declining sales. This effort has already resulted in more than 2,300 corporate job losses since last year, as well as hundreds of store closures and the sale of a stake in its China business. The Nashville office is expected to eventually house 2,000 employees.

To recover market share, the company is also retraining staff, updating technology, and renovating locations. Starbucks stated the current layoffs are intended to return the business to "durable, profitable growth" and will provide severance to the affected employees.
