S&P/ASX 200 Falls as Mining and Bank Stocks Decline

The Australian stock market declined Wednesday as negative Wall Street cues dragged down major miners and banks despite strong profit reports from Bravura Solutions.

The S&P/ASX 200 benchmark index fell 0.62 percent to 9,193.10 on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The decline followed negative cues from Wall Street, triggering losses across the energy, financial, and technology sectors.

Major iron ore miners, including BHP Group, Fortescue, and Rio Tinto, each saw shares drop nearly 1 percent. The four largest banks—ANZ Banking, Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, and National Australia Bank—also declined. These losses were partially offset by gains in gold miners such as Newmont and Evolution Mining.

Individual corporate reports created significant volatility. Seek Limited shares tumbled over 14 percent after the company announced a $200 million write-down of software-as-a-service investments. Conversely, Bravura Solutions shares surged nearly 15 percent following a report of nearly 50 percent growth in full-year profits.
