Samsung Relocates U.S. Headquarters to Texas Amid Job Cuts

Samsung Electronics is relocating its U.S. consumer electronics headquarters, Samsung Electronics America, from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, to Plano, Texas, by the end of 2026. The move has resulted in the reduction of 739 positions in New Jersey, as disclosed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice. While the company offered relocation opportunities to most affected employees, others were laid off.

Job cuts also occurred at the destination site in Plano, where approximately 100 workers, including staff in the mobile division, were dismissed. Separately, the IT services affiliate Samsung SDS America notified authorities of 179 potential job cuts at its Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, office due to its own headquarters relocation.

These reductions occur as the company faces diverging financial trends. Samsung's chip division is seeing record profits driven by AI demand, but the mobile division expects its first-ever loss due to competition from Apple and Chinese rivals such as TCL and Hisense. Samsung stated that the relocation aims to foster collaboration within the AI ecosystem and denied that a broad global restructuring of its consumer product business is underway. The company noted that the shift may lead to changes in workforce structure for employees unable to relocate or to optimize functions for key business priorities.
