BMW Faces Backlash Over Spider-Man In-Car Animations
BMW owners in over 70 countries are protesting movie promotional animations on vehicle dashboards, alleging the campaign violates previous privacy promises.
Owners of post-2020 BMW vehicles in over 70 countries are criticizing the automaker for deploying promotional content for the film 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' on dashboard screens. Running from July 27 through August 10, 2026, the campaign targets cars using BMW Operating Systems 7, 8, 8.5, 9, or X. Upon startup, eligible vehicles display a banner that, when tapped, triggers a 19-second full-screen animation featuring a BMW and Spider-Man, synchronized with music and ambient lighting.
BMW Group describes the initiative as a brand partnership rather than advertising, stating the animations are optional 'festive animations' delivered via its Festive App. The campaign is part of a $309 million partnership with Sony Pictures and Marvel, featuring vehicles such as the BMW iX3, which appear in the film's plot.
Critics and owners argue the move cheapens the luxury experience and contradicts a 2023 pledge by Senior VP Stephan Durach, who previously asserted that the vehicle cabin is a private space and the company would not sell screen space for commercials. The controversy has centered on whether these themed animations constitute a breach of the private environment promised to consumers.
