Iran Proposes BRICS Financial Corridor to Bypass Sanctions

The Central Bank of Iran proposed a dedicated financial corridor for BRICS members to integrate payment networks and reduce dependence on external financial infrastructure.

The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran proposed the creation of a dedicated financial corridor during BRICS financial meetings in India. The initiative seeks to integrate the payment networks of BRICS members and establish an independent infrastructure for cross-border financial settlement.

Rather than introducing a single common currency, the proposed system would rely on the interoperability of existing national payment systems and local currencies. This framework aims to increase the use of national currencies for bilateral trade and decrease reliance on financial infrastructure operated outside the bloc.

In addition to the corridor proposal, the governor of the Central Bank of Iran announced that Tehran is pursuing membership in the New Development Bank. These combined efforts are intended to create alternative channels for international trade, allowing Iran to bypass constraints imposed by sanctions and limited access to global financial systems.
