IATA Reports Mixed June 2026 Global Aviation Demand

The International Air Transport Association reported diverging trends in global aviation for June 2026, with passenger demand falling 1.7% compared to the previous year while air cargo demand climbed 8.5%. Passenger declines were centered in the domestic markets of China, Japan, and the United States, with Middle Eastern carriers seeing a sharp 14% drop due to the Iran war. In contrast, growth was recorded in Africa, Latin America, and Europe, with the Europe-Asia corridor leading at 11%.

Air cargo growth outpaced global capacity and general trade, which grew by 5.2%. North American carriers led the sector with a 13.1% increase, driven by urgent shipments and high-value technology products. However, the association noted that the New Export Orders Index has remained below 50 for four consecutive months, suggesting growth is tied to specific flows rather than a broad export surge.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh cited rising fuel prices and geopolitical instability as primary headwinds. He stated that stabilizing the Middle East and normalizing oil supplies are essential for the global economy. While expressing optimism for the second half of 2026, Walsh warned that renewed United States tariffs and ongoing hostilities in the Middle East remain significant risks.
