Italy Delays 13.5 Billion Euro Messina Strait Bridge Project

Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini has delayed the start of the world's longest suspension bridge project amid legal, financial, and technical disputes.

Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini has repeatedly delayed the start of a 13.5 billion euro project to construct the world's longest suspension bridge across the Strait of Messina. Although Salvini maintained that construction would begin by the summer of 2026, no work has commenced in Torre Faro.

The project faces a combination of legal and financial obstacles. Rome prosecutors have launched a corruption investigation, and the Court of Audit of Italy has blocked the project, citing concerns over EU environmental compliance and financial sustainability. Additionally, the Higher Council of Public Works of Italy has issued more than 100 requirements regarding materials and seismic risk that must be met before the project can proceed.

Technical experts have questioned the feasibility of the bridge, noting that suspension cables of the required size cannot be tested and that the region is prone to high seismic activity. While the Webuild-led Eurolink consortium claims the design can withstand magnitude 7.1 earthquakes and will generate 23 billion euro for the economy, opponents argue otherwise. Environmental groups, including WWF Italy, warn of ecological damage to bird and marine mammal migration corridors, suggesting that funds be redirected to upgrade Sicily's existing transport infrastructure.
