EASA Warns of Aviation Risks Amid Global Conflicts

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is warning that escalating conflicts in the Middle East, Russia-Ukraine, and between Pakistan and Afghanistan are creating severe aviation safety risks. These disruptions have reshaped Middle Eastern airspace and clogged primary routes between Asia and Europe, forcing airlines into tighter, unconventional corridors over Azerbaijan and Central Asia.

Executive Director Florian Guillermet stated that this concentration of traffic on unusual routes generates operational hazards. In response to these threats, EASA renewed an advisory on March 28 directing aircraft to avoid airspace over Iran, Israel, and parts of the Gulf until April 10.

Beyond airspace congestion, the agency is addressing a surge in rogue drone activity at European airports, including sites in Stockholm and Munich. Guillermet characterized these disruptions as part of a hybrid warfare landscape involving state-related activity. To combat this, EASA is drafting new guidance and technical requirements for counter-drone devices to better protect civil aviation infrastructure.
