Kenya and Tanzania Deploy Security Forces to Block Saba Saba Protests

The Government of Kenya and the Government of Tanzania deployed heavy security forces to suppress pro-democracy demonstrations on July 7, 2026.

The Government of Kenya and the Government of Tanzania deployed massive security forces on July 7, 2026, to suppress protests marking the Saba Saba anniversary. In Nairobi, the National Police Service locked down the city center, erecting roadblocks and checkpoints on major arteries including Thika, Mombasa, and Jogoo roads. Authorities sealed off Parliament with razor wire and deployed anti-riot units, resulting in the arrest of dozens of protesters and widespread traffic congestion that stranded thousands of commuters.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud declared the gatherings illegal, claiming no formal notifications were received. However, the Economic Justice Movement and activists Elisha Ochieng and Muteti Mulinge asserted they had provided legal notice for a peaceful march to petition against extrajudicial killings and economic mismanagement. While running battles were reported on Thika Road, demonstrations in Mombasa remained largely peaceful after police agreed to a limited 15-minute march.

In Tanzania, the government banned all political gatherings, leading to a heavy military and police presence in Dar es Salaam. Security forces prevented protesters from gathering to demand democratic reforms following a disputed October election. Home Affairs Minister Patrobas Katambi stated the country would defend itself against threats to public order.

Opponents of the crackdown, including politician James Orengo, described the Kenyan security presence as the characteristics of a "police state." These events follow a history of lethal violence during previous Saba Saba commemorations and occur amid growing concerns over shrinking civic freedoms in both nations.
