Lawmakers Demand Inquiry Into USS Abraham Lincoln Crew Crisis

The United States Navy is facing intense scrutiny following reports of a severe mental health and supply crisis aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Deployed since November 2025 to support combat operations and a blockade against Iran, the aircraft carrier has spent over 250 days at sea, with more than 200 consecutive days without a port call. Family members and Democratic lawmakers report that exhausted crew members have attempted to jump overboard due to burnout and deteriorating living conditions, including moldy showers, broken toilets, water contamination, and shortages of food and basic hygiene supplies.

During town hall meetings in San Diego, families confronted Navy leadership over the psychological toll on the 5,000 sailors and Marines. While Vice Admiral Joseph Cahill acknowledged the strain on personnel, the Navy has disputed claims of an increase in suicidal ideation and denied reports of food shortages. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed the allegations as "fake news" and "completely misrepresented."

In response, Senators Richard Blumenthal and Ruben Gallego have demanded a formal inquiry and oversight visit to investigate the conditions. Representative Seth Moulton announced that the House Armed Services Committee will also conduct an investigation. To address the crisis, the Navy is deploying the USS George Washington to replace the Lincoln, while Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao stated the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group is also being prepared for relief, though no specific return date has been provided.
