Irish Government Approves €17.5 Billion MetroLink Tender Phase

The Government of Ireland has approved revised cost estimates for MetroLink, a 19km driverless rail line in Dublin, allowing the project to advance to the tender phase. The estimated cost has risen significantly from a 2022 prediction of €9.5 billion to a new range between €14.4 billion and €17.5 billion, with a center point of €15.75 billion. Transport Infrastructure Ireland attributes the increase to building inflation and more detailed design specifications.

The project will run from Swords in north county Dublin to Charlemont in the south city, including stops at Dublin Airport and 15 other locations. The system is designed to carry 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction, doubling the capacity of the Luas Green Line. Officials state the project will reduce traffic congestion and unlock the development of up to 200,000 new homes across the Greater Dublin Area.

Construction is expected to begin between early 2027 and 2028, with operations projected to start between 2036 and 2038. Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien emphasized that strict contract conditions will be implemented to avoid the cost overruns seen at the National Children’s Hospital. Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris described the approval as a milestone for national infrastructure and economic competitiveness.
