Citadel Securities Warns AI Trade Has Little Room for Error
Citadel Securities warns that converging capital expenditure doubts, political opposition to data centers, and macroeconomic pressures are creating significant risks for the artificial intelligence trade.
Citadel Securities issued a macro note warning that the artificial intelligence trade currently has very little room for error. The firm identifies three converging risks: investor doubts regarding returns on heavy capital expenditure, growing political pushback against data center construction, and a challenging macroeconomic environment.
According to the firm, recent equity sell-offs suggest investors now demand firmer evidence that extraordinary spending will yield matching profits. Citadel Securities cited Meta Platforms Incorporated as a primary example of this risk, noting that the company's third-quarter capital spending of approximately $35 billion exceeded its operating cash flow of $33 billion.
Political opposition is also rising, with polls indicating significant support among both Democrats and Republicans for limits on data center construction. These factors are compounded by macroeconomic pressures, including sticky inflation and Brent crude oil prices exceeding $117 per barrel. Citadel Securities suggests these conditions could limit the Federal Reserve System's ability to ease policy if AI investment slows.
