Ukrainian Drone Crashes in Lithuania Amid Russian Sabotage Attempts
The Government of Ukraine apologized after a drone crashed in northern Lithuania, while Lithuanian officials linked a separate Starlink base station arson attempt to Russian hybrid warfare.
A Ukrainian drone crashed in the Biržai district of northern Lithuania on Sunday, October 18, after entering the country's airspace from Poland. The incident triggered a red air alert for central and northern Lithuania, the temporary closure of Kaunas Airport, and the scrambling of two Italian Eurofighter jets under NATO command. While pilots could not visually identify the object due to poor weather, debris eventually damaged a civilian car near the village of Juodzionys. No injuries were reported.
The Government of Ukraine issued an apology for the incident, stating the drone may have been diverted by Russian electronic warfare during an operation against military targets in Russia. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda characterized the crash as evidence that Russia's war of aggression is spilling over onto the eastern flank of NATO and the EU. Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas proposed a joint investigation with Poland, where the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces is investigating a suspected airspace violation south of Lublin.
Simultaneously, Lithuanian authorities are investigating an attempted arson attack on a SpaceX Starlink base station near Vilnius. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius and the National Crisis Management Centre described the attack as an act of sabotage linked to Russia's hybrid war, noting similar previous attacks in Poland and Bulgaria. The Federal Government of Russia has dismissed these accusations as baseless. Prime Minister Sinkevičius has convened the National Security Commission to examine both the drone crash and the sabotage attempt.
