India Targets Global Leadership in Clean Energy Technology

Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy announced a national strategy to transform India into a leading global producer of clean energy technologies. Speaking at the 7th CII International Energy Conference & Exhibition, Kumaraswamy argued that national strength now depends on manufacturing resilience and technological supply chains rather than simple resource access.

Kumaraswamy identified steel as the central pillar of the global energy transition and reaffirmed the national target of reaching 300 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2030. He emphasized that the sector's future will be defined by sustainability, competitiveness, and technological advancement rather than production capacity alone.

To support this transition, the government is implementing several financial initiatives. These include the Rs 10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE Scheme for electric mobility and a Rs 18,100 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme targeting 50 GWh of Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery capacity. Additionally, a Rs 7,280 crore scheme for Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets aims to reduce India's import dependence on critical minerals.
