HM Revenue & Customs Issues Final Self Assessment Deadline Warning

HM Revenue & Customs warned UK residents to register for Self Assessment by October 5 to avoid automatic fixed penalties and daily fines.

HM Revenue & Customs issued a final warning to United Kingdom residents to register for Self Assessment by the deadline of Monday, October 5, 2026. The system collects Income Tax from individuals whose tax is not automatically deducted, such as investors, landlords, high earners, and the self-employed.

Failure to register by the deadline results in an immediate £100 automatic fixed penalty, followed by daily fines of £10 for up to 90 days. Additional penalties apply for late payments, with charges of 5% of the tax due or £300, whichever is greater, applied at the six-month and 12-month marks.

Tax Aid noted that individuals who believe they received a request to file in error can ask the authority to withdraw the return, provided they have no reportable income.
