New Zealand Extends Strategic Diesel Reserve Until 2027
The New Zealand Government extended an agreement with Z Energy to maintain a 550,000-barrel strategic diesel reserve to ensure energy resilience amid global market volatility.
The Government of New Zealand extended an agreement with Z Energy to maintain a strategic diesel reserve of 550,000 barrels until August 1, 2027. The reserve consists of approximately 90 million litres of fuel, representing roughly nine days of national consumption.
Stored in tanks at Marsden Point, the facility was refurbished using $21.6 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund. Under the terms of the deal, Z Energy owns and manages the diesel, while the Crown retains control over its release into the market. Any fuel remaining unused by the end of the contract will transition into Z Energy's standard business stocks by November 2027.
Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones stated the extension is necessary to ensure fuel resilience amid international market volatility and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Jones noted that diesel remains critical for the economy, specifically for farming and transport, and that the reserve provides confidence that key industries can continue operating during threats to fuel security.
