Gabe Vasquez Leads Greg Cunningham in New Mexico House Race
Democratic Representative Gabe Vasquez holds a 16-point lead over Republican Greg Cunningham in the race for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District.
Democratic U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez led Republican challenger Greg Cunningham by 16 points late Tuesday in the contest for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District. The projected victory for Vasquez contributed to Democrats securing control of the House of Representatives.
At a watch party in Las Cruces, Vasquez highlighted his bipartisan record and pledged to prioritize funding for water infrastructure following historic flooding in the Hatch and Rincon Valleys. He stated that he had brought home results to the communities across New Mexico and emphasized that water infrastructure funding requires a partnership with the state.
Greg Cunningham, a retired police detective and Marine veteran, refused to concede during his watch party in Albuquerque. Cunningham noted that less than half of the vote had been counted and attributed Republican struggles on election night to high fuel costs. The 2nd Congressional District has historically flipped between parties, though it was held by the GOP for most of the period since 1969 until a 2021 redistricting effort changed the district's demographics.
