Isabel Schnabel Outlines Factors for Future ECB Rate Hikes
European Central Bank board member Isabel Schnabel identified energy prices and global borrowing costs as key factors in determining future interest rate hikes.
European Central Bank board member Isabel Schnabel stated that the bank must analyze three domestic and global factors to determine if further interest rate hikes are necessary. Speaking in Luxembourg, Schnabel identified the persistence of energy price increases and their effect on inflation expectations as a primary concern.
Schnabel noted that the resilience of overall economic demand and the impact of rising global borrowing costs, particularly driven by U.S. yields, will influence future policy. While the ECB has already raised rates twice this year to combat inflation exceeding its 2% target, she suggested that the economy might respond more strongly to tightening than previously assumed, which could dampen medium-term inflationary pressures.
Despite this possibility, Schnabel observed that current credit dynamics suggest interest rates may not yet be restrictive enough to slow the economy.
