Nikkei 225 Index Rises on AI Infrastructure Demand
The Nikkei 225 Index closed higher on Thursday, driven by rebounds in semiconductor and artificial intelligence shares despite rising crude oil prices and bond yields.
The Nikkei 225 Index closed higher on Thursday, July 23, 2026, finishing at 66,422.60, an increase of 307.00 points or 0.46 percent. The index experienced significant volatility throughout the day, reaching an intra-day high of 66,972.34 and rising as much as 774.44 points before settling at the final close. The broader Topix index also increased by 0.51 percent to 4,053.88.
Growth was primarily fueled by technology and financial sectors. Semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related shares rebounded following a correction phase, supported by sustained demand for AI infrastructure in the United States. Specific gainers included Lasertec, which soared more than 8 percent, Advantest, which jumped nearly 6 percent, and Mizuho Financial Group, which advanced almost 3 percent. Other gains were noted in mining and nonferrous metal issues.
Market momentum was tempered by several headwinds. Gains were partially offset by declines in exporters and automaker stocks, including Toyota and Honda. Additionally, rising Japanese government bond yields and higher crude oil futures created concerns over corporate earnings. The increase in oil prices was linked to supply disruption concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
