House Democrats and Thomas Massie Push to Oust Pete Hegseth
House Democrats and Republican Representative Thomas Massie are seeking the removal of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth through impeachment efforts.
House Democrats have identified the removal of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as a primary objective should they secure the House majority in the upcoming midterm elections. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that ousting Hegseth would be one of the first actions taken by a Democratic majority.
While the current Republican majority makes a Democratic-led impeachment difficult, Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican critic of overseas interventions, intends to force an impeachment vote shortly after the House returns to session on November 9. Massie indicated he saw no other way to stop the administration from waging illegal war.
Critics base their push for removal on Hegseth's leadership style, controversial proposals regarding military executions, and a 2025 incident where strike details were leaked to a journalist via a personal phone. The Pentagon has defended Hegseth, with press secretary Kingsley Wilson describing him as a transformative leader. Any successful House impeachment would move to the Senate, where conviction requires a two-thirds supermajority and is considered unlikely.
