Saudi Arabia Leads Diplomatic Push to Contain Regional Escalation
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held consultations with ministers from Qatar, Oman, Yemen, and Iraq to coordinate regional de-escalation and maritime security.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan led a series of diplomatic consultations between August 16 and August 18 to address rising regional tensions and the need for security coordination. On August 16, Prince Faisal held phone calls with Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi to discuss the preservation of maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb to protect global supply chains and energy markets.
During the same period, Prince Faisal met with Yemeni Foreign Minister Afrah al-Zouba to discuss bilateral relations and Saudi Arabia's ongoing support for the security and stability of Yemen.
The diplomatic outreach expanded on August 18 when Prince Faisal spoke with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. The two officials emphasized a return to dialogue and negotiations to mitigate risks to regional stability. Fuad Hussein specifically stressed the importance of maintaining bilateral consultations and coordinating with other concerned nations to contain escalation, a move occurring amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.
