Zambian Government Confirms Death of Former Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya
The Zambian government confirmed former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya died after a security raid targeting opposition candidate Brian Mundubile's premises in Lusaka.
The Zambian government confirmed the death of Mutotwe Kafwaya, a former minister and opposition member of parliament, who was fatally wounded during a joint security operation on August 14, 2026. The raid took place in Kabulonga, Lusaka, one day after the general election in which incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema won a second term with 60% of the vote.
Security forces, including the Drug Enforcement Commission and the Central Joint Operations Committee, targeted premises linked to Brian Mundubile, the presidential candidate for the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity. Authorities reported an exchange of fire with unknown individuals and arrested 11 people on charges of treason, insurgency, and illegal military training. The government stated the operation was intelligence-led and followed the recovery of K7.3 million in a separate action.
Brian Mundubile has rejected the government's account as "total fabrications," claiming Kafwaya was shot inside his residence while Mundubile and his family were present. The incident has heightened political tensions as Mundubile prepares to challenge the official election results in court.
