Supreme Court of India Reviews Online NEET Exam Proposal

The Supreme Court of India announced on July 27, 2026, that it will review recommendations from a government-appointed high-powered task force before deciding if the NEET examination should transition to an online format. A bench comprising Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe expressed a need for "out-of-the-box suggestions" and emphasized the requirement for stronger cyber security and database protection during the shift from physical to computer-based testing.

The court's decision follows a plea filed by RJD MP Sudhakar Singh. The legal challenge emerged after the National Testing Agency cancelled the May 3 NEET-UG exam due to alleged paper leaks. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the task force, commissioned by the Prime Minister, is led by technology expert Nandan Nilekani and includes former officials from the Intelligence Bureau, the Ministry of Education, and ISRO.

The judicial body has scheduled a subsequent hearing on the petition for August 3 to further determine the feasibility and security of the proposed digital transition.
