US Holiday Retail Sales Projected to Top $1 Trillion

Bain & Company projects holiday retail sales will exceed $1 trillion for the first time, driven by inflation and value-seeking consumer behaviors.

Holiday retail sales in the United States are projected to exceed $1 trillion for the first time, representing a 4.5% year-over-year growth according to Bain & Company. While overall spending remains strong, analysts indicate that rising inflation is the primary driver of this increase, which masks thinner unit growth in furniture, food, and beverage categories.

Consumer spending is supported by a $43 billion increase in tax refunds, although Bank of America estimates that higher gas prices have offset half of this benefit. In response, shoppers are adopting value-seeking behaviors, including switching to private-label products, utilizing discounts, and making more frequent shopping trips with smaller baskets.

Financial and technological shifts are also shaping the season. Adobe expects buy now, pay later spending to reach a record $21.3 billion. Additionally, PwC reports that 29% of consumers plan to use artificial intelligence for product research and price comparison, though most are not yet purchasing directly through AI platforms.
