Roy Cooper Leads Michael Whatley in North Carolina Senate Race

Former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper holds an 11% lead over Republican Michael Whatley in the race for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina. According to an Elon University Poll conducted between August 21 and 31, 49% of likely voters favor Cooper, while 38% support Whatley.

The survey reveals a substantial gap in candidate recognition, with 71% of registered voters familiar with Cooper compared to 47% for Whatley. Voters identified the general economy, inflation, the cost of living, and health care as the most critical issues facing the state.

Beyond the Senate race, the poll indicates widespread disapproval of President Donald Trump's performance, with his approval rating in North Carolina hitting its lowest point since he took office in January 2025. A majority of registered voters in the state also expressed opposition to the war with Iran.
