Chicago Families Turn to Costume Swaps as Candy Prices Surge
Chicago residents are using community costume swaps and budget alternatives as candy prices rise 7.7% over the past year.
Candy prices in the Chicago area have increased by approximately 7.7% over the last year, a rate more than four times higher than the 1.8% rise in overall grocery inflation. This price surge, combined with the increasing cost of costumes, has forced local families to seek budget-saving alternatives for the Halloween season.
Marisa Ikpoh, founder of the non-profit The Give and Receive, responded to these financial pressures by organizing a pop-up Boo-tique costume swap at the 36th Ward Office. The event allows families to exchange used costumes to reduce individual spending.
Local businesses are also struggling to manage the economic shift. Mo Fattah, owner of the wholesaler Stock 'n Save, reported efforts to minimize the impact of rising wholesale costs on consumers. Similarly, Rob Karr of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association noted that retailers are facing difficult decisions to remain viable and recover costs while attempting to maintain customer satisfaction.
