China Leads 65 Nations in UN AI Accessibility Push

China delivered a joint statement at the United Nations Human Rights Council advocating for AI to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities and vulnerable groups.

The Government of China led a coalition of 65 countries in delivering a joint statement during the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Delivered by Jia Guide, the proposal advocates for leveraging artificial intelligence to advance accessibility and ensure that older persons, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups can fully exercise their human rights.

The initiative is built on four primary pillars: maintaining a people-centered approach to AI, adopting a development-oriented strategy, ensuring fairness and impartiality between nations, and bridging the global digital divide to ensure universal benefits.

Several nations supported the statement, including Russia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Venezuela, Sudan, and Cambodia. The proposal was presented during the council's biennial panel on technical cooperation.
