BJP Minister Says Sugar Should Become More Expensive

Madhya Pradesh Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya sparked controversy by suggesting sugar prices should rise to discourage adult consumption for health reasons.

Madhya Pradesh Minister and BJP MLA Kailash Vijayvargiya stated on Wednesday that sugar should become expensive, arguing that the commodity should only be available at cheap rates through government fair-price shops for children. Citing Ayurvedic practices, Vijayvargiya advised individuals over the age of 40 to avoid sugar entirely for health reasons, claiming that 90% of people no longer like sweets.

These comments come as retail sugar prices have risen to an all-India average of Rs 65.05 per kg. Vijayvargiya suggested that those over 40 could eat jaggery occasionally but should otherwise avoid sugar.

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari condemned the remarks, accusing the BJP of ridiculing poor and middle-class families struggling with inflation. Patwari warned that the electorate would respond to these comments in upcoming elections, stating that the country is watching the BJP leaders.
