China Launches African Photo Tour Promoting Taiwan Reunification
Chinese Ambassador Guo Haiyan opened a multi-nation photo exhibition in Nairobi to assert that Taiwan's reunification with mainland China is inevitable.
Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan opened a photo exhibition in Nairobi on October 23, 2026, to mark the 81st anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China. Organized by the Xinhua News Agency, the exhibition titled "Remembering Taiwan's Restoration, Advancing National Reunification" is touring five African nations: Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria, and Mozambique.
Guo Haiyan asserted that Taiwan is part of China and that efforts by independence forces to challenge this are "doomed to fail." She cited the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and UN Resolution 2758 as the legal foundations for the One-China principle. The event coincided with the 70th anniversary of China-Africa diplomatic relations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
Former African Union Commission deputy chairperson Erastus Mwencha attended the opening, drawing parallels between the restoration of Taiwan and Africa's own anti-colonial liberation struggles. Guo praised Kenya for its support of Beijing's position, referencing a 2025 joint statement issued during President William Ruto's state visit. The exhibition uses historical images of Taiwan's 1945 return from Japanese colonial rule to reinforce Beijing's claims of sovereignty.
