BHP Cuts 300 Iron Ore Jobs in Western Australia

BHP is cutting approximately 300 jobs across its Pilbara iron ore operations amid ongoing labor disputes over pay and conditions.

Mining company BHP is cutting approximately 300 jobs across its iron ore operations in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The redundancies affect the South Flank, Mining Area C, Jimblebar, and Newman sites. The company stated the changes are necessary to ensure the business continues to make a significant contribution to the region and state, adding that it will seek to redeploy workers into other roles where possible.

Minister for the Pilbara Amber-Jade Sanderson expressed disappointment and urged the company to redeploy the skilled workers, noting these skills are highly needed across the sector and the broader economy. The WA Electrical Trades Union condemned the cuts as a "senseless attack" and criticized the company for announcing the move via the media before consulting with workers and their representatives.

These redundancies occur during an ongoing dispute between the company and unions regarding pay and conditions at Port Hedland operations. That conflict has already resulted in strikes and applications to the Fair Work Commission to settle bargaining disputes.
