US Government Spends $950 Million on California Detention Centers
The US government purchased three immigration detention facilities in California from GEO Group to expand infrastructure for its mass deportation campaign.
The United States government paid $950 million to purchase three immigration detention facilities in Adelanto, California, from GEO Group. This acquisition allows the Trump administration to gain direct control over the infrastructure used for its mass deportation campaign, which has seen over 650,000 arrests and 600,000 deportations since 2025.
While the federal government now owns the assets, GEO Group will continue to operate the facilities under an existing contract through December 2034. This transaction follows a similar $1.5 billion deal in early 2026 for facilities owned by CoreCivic.
The Government Accountability Office warned that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is expanding capacity without a comprehensive plan, which could lead to waste and long-term affordability issues. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE will continue making arrests across the US to ensure the administration's mission is carried out.
