Hong Kong Monetary Authority Holds Base Rate at 4.25%
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority maintained its base interest rate at 4.25% following a similar hold by the US Federal Reserve.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority maintained its base interest rate at 4.25% on Thursday. This decision follows the US Federal Reserve's move to hold its policy rate within a range of 3.75% to 4%.
The action is a requirement of the Linked Exchange Rate System established in 1983, which pegs the Hong Kong dollar to the US dollar between 7.75 and 7.85. Under this mechanism, the base rate is generally set 50 basis points above the lower bound of the Federal Reserve's target range.
Officials noted that future rate environments in Hong Kong depend on US adjustments, which remain subject to uncertainty regarding inflation and labor market data. Because Hong Kong imports US monetary policy, a projected Federal Reserve rate hike in December would likely force a corresponding increase in the local base rate, affecting property developers and mortgage holders regardless of domestic economic conditions.
