Lidl Overtakes Morrisons to Become UK's Fifth-Largest Supermarket

Lidl has overtaken Morrisons to become the United Kingdom's fifth-largest supermarket, ending Morrisons' long-held position in the traditional big four. According to Worldpanel by Numerator data for the 12 weeks ending May 17, 2026, Lidl secured an 8.6% market share with sales rising 8.8% to £3.2 billion, while Morrisons' share fell to 8.3% with sales growth of just 1.3%.

The shift reflects consumer migration toward discount retail models amid inflationary pressures. Lidl's ascent is attributed to its value-led proposition, operational simplicity, and aggressive pricing across more than 1,000 stores. To sustain momentum, Lidl GB announced a £600 million investment to open 50 additional stores and improve logistics infrastructure. Ryan McDonnell, Chief Executive of Lidl GB, characterized the milestone as significant and emphasized the company's focus on delivering value and quality.

Morrisons has struggled under a debt pile exceeding £3 billion following its 2021 acquisition by private equity firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice. Chief Executive Rami Baitiéh, who initiated a turnaround plan in 2023, is overseeing the closure of over 100 loss-making Morrisons Daily convenience stores. Morrisons contested the Worldpanel findings, arguing the data understates its performance by excluding its convenience store footprint.

Tesco maintained its dominant position with a 28.2% market share, up from 27.9% the previous year, supported by a 3.2% sales increase. Sainsbury's, Asda, and Aldi hold the second, third, and fourth positions respectively. Grocery inflation slowed to 3.1% in May, the lowest since December 2024, though analysts warn the Middle East conflict may trigger future price increases.
