Green Bay Officials Address Homelessness and Park Safety

Green Bay city officials and police increased park patrols and locked public restrooms following community concerns over homelessness and antisocial behavior.

City officials, law enforcement, and community members met Wednesday to discuss rising concerns regarding homelessness and antisocial behavior in Green Bay. The discussions centered on safety in east side parks, leading the city to indefinitely lock public bathrooms at St. John’s Park, Whitney Park, and St. James Park due to misuse.

Chris Davis, Chief of the Green Bay Police Department, responded to resident safety concerns by stating that unsafe behavior is not common among the homeless population. He noted that while some individuals engage in antisocial behavior, it does not represent the majority. To address reports of drug use and disturbances, the Green Bay Police Department has increased its presence in local parks.

Homeless Coordinator Jeremy Pingel stated that it remains uncertain when the locked park bathrooms will reopen. Data from a July homeless count indicates that 556 people are experiencing homelessness in Brown County, with 206 living on the streets and 350 utilizing shelters.
