Apple Challenges UK Government Over Encrypted iCloud Access

Apple Inc. launched a legal challenge at the Investigatory Powers Tribunal against the UK Home Office over a demand for access to end-to-end encrypted iCloud data. The dispute stems from a Technical Capability Notice issued under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, which requires the company to create a method for authorities to access information protected by Advanced Data Protection (ADP).

Apple argues that creating such access would introduce vulnerabilities and weaken security for all users. In response to the initial 2025 notice, the company removed ADP for new UK customers, a restriction that remains in place. The Home Office maintains that these powers are necessary to investigate terrorism and child sexual abuse.

Privacy organizations Privacy International and Liberty have supported the challenge, arguing that secret government orders undermine digital privacy. A case-management hearing is expected in September.
