Nigel Farage Resigns Clacton Seat to Fight By-Election

Nigel Farage resigned as MP for Clacton amid a donation probe and will contest a by-election on August 13 against satirical candidate Count Binface.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage resigned his parliamentary seat for Clacton-on-Sea on July 8, 2026, to trigger a by-election scheduled for August 13. Farage used the procedural 'legal fiction' of being appointed Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead to vacate his seat. He intends to reclaim the position, framing the contest as a "people versus the establishment" battle to let voters judge his actions.

The resignation follows a parliamentary standards investigation into an undeclared £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne and alleged payments from convicted fraudster George Cottrell. While Farage maintains he has "done nothing wrong," the Metropolitan Police also have an open inquiry into Reform UK donations from before the 2024 general election.

Major political parties, including Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats, are boycotting the race, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves calling the episode a "farce." This has left satirical candidate Count Binface, created by comedian Jon Harvey, as the primary challenger. Count Binface is campaigning on a comedic platform that includes nationalizing the singer Adele and renaming London Bridge. Green energy tycoon Dale Vince has pledged financial and moral support to the satirical candidate. An Ipsos poll suggests 33% of the UK public prefer Count Binface to win, compared to 21% for Farage.
