Indianapolis Approves $500 Million Metrobloks Data Center

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission approved a $500 million data center project by Metrobloks despite ongoing opposition from local community organizers.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission approved a proposal for Metrobloks to construct a $500 million data center in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood of Indianapolis. The Los Angeles-based developer plans to build the facility on Sherman Drive near 25th Street.

To address environmental concerns, Metrobloks intends to use a closed-loop cooling system designed to minimize water use and avoid groundwater extraction. The company describes the project as low-impact and compatible with the surrounding residential area.

The approval follows months of community debate and significant pushback from local residents. In response to the commission's decision, the organization Protect Martindale-Brightwood is exploring legal options to challenge the project, citing health and environmental concerns. City-County Councilor Ron Gibson stated his intent to continue working with the community as the project moves forward. While the proposal is officially approved, a construction start date has not been confirmed.
