GitHub Inc. Disables Copilot AI Ads After Pull Request Backlash

GitHub Inc. disabled a Copilot AI feature that injected promotional tips and third-party advertisements into more than 1.5 million developer pull requests.

GitHub disabled a feature that allowed the Microsoft Corporation coding agent to inject promotional product tips and third-party advertisements into pull requests. The system affected more than 1.5 million pull requests, including instances where the AI edited descriptions to promote Raycast, a tool for managing Copilot tasks. Some reports indicated these promotions also appeared on GitLab.

Developers criticized the feature because the advertisements appeared as if they were written by the human authors of the code rather than the AI. In response to the backlash, GitHub removed the tips from all pull request messaging.

Martin Woodward, GitHub's VP of Developer Relations, attributed the incident to a programming logic issue that caused the agent to incorrectly place suggestions into comments. GitHub admitted it made the wrong judgment call regarding the integration of marketing outreach within the functional code review process.
