Illinois Gas Prices Rise to $4.26 Per Gallon

Average regular unleaded gasoline prices in Illinois reached $4.26 per gallon on July 27, marking a sharp increase over previous weeks and the prior year.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Illinois rose to $4.26 as of Friday, July 27, 2026. Data from the American Automobile Association shows this is a sharp increase from $4.15 one week prior and an 85-cent jump compared to the $3.41 per gallon recorded during the same period last year.

Illinois remains one of the most expensive states for fuel in the Midwest, while neighboring Indiana and Missouri reported average prices below $3.89 per gallon. The price surge is attributed to regional market conditions, distribution costs, and a state gasoline tax of 48.3 cents per gallon maintained by the Government of Illinois.

This price increase coincides with peak summer travel and daily commuting. Experts suggest these higher costs may lead to an increase in the price of goods and services as businesses pass their rising transportation expenses on to consumers.
