Nothing Announces Nothing OS 5.0 Based on Android 17

Nothing announced Nothing OS 5.0, a major software update based on Android 17 that introduces a refreshed visual identity and AI-driven functionality. The update features the Geist system typeface, a redesigned home screen with transparent elements, and an adaptive color engine that tints icons based on wallpaper colors. New lock screen clock designs include the Gooey and Micrographics styles.

The update introduces the Essential feature suite, which includes Essential Voice for real-time transcription and Essential Space for memory organization. Essential Space now supports the Model Context Protocol, allowing third-party AI read-only access to device data. Additionally, the Essential Apps Builder enables users to create lightweight, codeless on-device utilities using natural language prompts.

System architecture changes include a split swipe interface for notifications and quick settings, cross-platform Quick Share for iOS and Android, and a dedicated app for the Glyph Interface. Digital wellness is addressed through a new Away Time widget.

The Open Beta program launched on August 26, 2026, starting with the Phone (3) before expanding to other models. A staged stable rollout will begin in mid-October 2026 and conclude in January 2027, covering devices such as the CMF Phone 2 Pro.
