Amazon and Google Announce Billions in Data Center Expansions

Amazon is investing $10 billion in a Missouri data center campus while Google will spend $1.5 billion to expand its Alabama facility.

Amazon announced a $10 billion investment on June 15, 2026, to build a data center campus on approximately 1,000 acres in Montgomery County, Missouri. The project is expected to create 400 full-time permanent jobs and thousands of construction positions, generating hundreds of millions in property tax revenue over 25 years. To address community needs, the company pledged over $7 million for emergency dispatch services, community programs, and the county fairgrounds. To mitigate environmental impact, Amazon is partnering with Arable Labs to implement irrigation technology for local farmers, aiming to reduce groundwater use by 100 million gallons.

Despite support from Governor Mike Kehoe and local commissioners, the Missouri project faces opposition. Preserve Montgomery County LLC filed a lawsuit alleging violations of open meetings and records laws, while residents have raised concerns regarding water and electricity usage.

Simultaneously, Google announced a $1.5 billion expansion of its data center campus in Jackson County, Alabama. Located at the former Tennessee Valley Authority Widows Creek coal plant in Bridgeport, the expansion will employ over 1,000 contract workers. Google is partnering with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Kairos Power to develop advanced nuclear energy to meet power demands and has established a $2 million Energy Impact Fund for local weatherization.

Related industrial growth continues in the region, as residents in Callaway County, Missouri, recently met to discuss a proposed 800,000-square-foot data center by Denver-based AI company Crusoe, focusing on its estimated annual water usage of 1.4 million gallons.
