Aldi Announces Massive Store Expansions in UK and US

Aldi is expanding its global footprint with a £900 million UK investment for 2027 and plans to open 580 new US stores by 2028.

The grocery retailer Aldi is executing a large-scale international expansion strategy across the United Kingdom and the United States. In the UK, the company is investing £900 million in 2027 to open 40 new supermarkets and upgrade its distribution network, moving toward a long-term goal of 1,500 stores. This follows a broader £1.6 billion investment programme that includes opening 27 stores by the end of 2026.

Recent UK developments include three new sites in South Wales, with a Newport location opening October 22 and a Cardiff branch approved by the Cardiff Council. Further 2027 investments include £60 million for the South West, targeting Devon and Trowbridge, and £19.5 million for Scotland to open a store in Uddingston and extend five others. The company expects these moves to create thousands of jobs and benefit British suppliers.

Simultaneously, Aldi is targeting underserved American markets, planning 180 new stores in 2026 and 400 more by the end of 2028. Following a March opening in Portland, Maine, the chain is reportedly considering a second Maine location at a former Save-A-Lot site in South Paris, which has been vacant since May.
