Italy Retail Sales Unexpectedly Dip 0.1 Percent in June
ISTAT reports a 0.1 percent decrease in Italy's monthly retail sales for June, driven by lower food demand despite a surge in electronics spending.
The Italian statistical office ISTAT reported that retail sales unexpectedly decreased by 0.1 percent on a monthly basis in June. This result reversed a 0.2 percent increase recorded in May and fell short of economist predictions, which had forecast a 0.1 percent increase.
The monthly decline was primarily caused by a 0.4 percent contraction in the demand for food products. Conversely, non-food products saw a 0.2 percent growth, bolstered by a significant 14.2 percent increase in the sales of electronics and household appliances.
Despite the monthly dip, Italy's yearly retail sales growth improved to 3.1 percent in June, up from 2.2 percent in the previous month. ISTAT attributed this annual upward trend to the expansion of e-commerce and large-scale retail trade.
