Albania Funds Kanye West Concert Amid Corruption Protests
Prime Minister Edi Rama defended a 4 million euro government expenditure for a Kanye West concert in Tirana despite public backlash and ongoing anti-corruption protests.
Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Albanian government are defending the decision to spend approximately 4 million euros to ensure a concert by U.S. rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye, takes place on July 11 near Tirana. The funds were used to build a temporary stadium to prevent the event's cancellation and avoid embarrassing Albania before 25,000 foreign visitors from 80 countries who had already purchased tickets.
Rama and Culture Minister Blendi Gonxhe argued the investment is justified by a projected revenue of at least 100 million euros from increased consumption. However, the decision has sparked fierce backlash from the arts community and opposition figures, particularly because Kanye West has been banned in other European countries, including the UK and Italy, for his history of antisemitic remarks and use of Nazi imagery. Reports of weak ticket sales for the 60,000-capacity venue have further fueled criticism that public funds should be prioritized for national emergencies.
This controversy unfolds as Tirana faces daily large-scale protests. These demonstrations were initially triggered by a luxury resort development project in a protected nature reserve and have expanded into broader demands for Rama's resignation over allegations of government corruption.
